Vengeance au féminin
Jennifer, a New York–based writer who has rented a cabin in the woods to seek inspiration, is brutally beaten and raped by a gang of delinquents. After taking time to recover, she prepares her revenge.
Meir Zarchi’s I Spit On Your Grave is the grindhouse era’s Gone With The Wind. This rape-revenge epic was initially a flop when released in 1978 as Day of the Woman. However, it became a smash in 1980 when distributor Jerry Gross re-titled it and marketed it as a horror picture. Time and distribution have allowed I Spit on Your Grave a chance to be viewed as the radical cinematic event it was made to be.
Film Threat
This brutal, explicit rape-revenge movie isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s told with an eerie minimalism that marks it a grim, disturbing B-movieportrait of civilization’s abuse at the hands of savagery, and its subsequent, equally barbarous revenge.
