The Cinémathèque goes beyond archiving and screening films. It offers a wide range of film education programmes for both young people and adults, designed to teach about cinema, preserve its heritage, and encourage critical thinking.

The Cinémathèque is getting a makeover...

Our beloved cinema on Place du Théâtre closed in September 2025 for extensive renovations. Led by the City of Luxembourg in partnership with Fabeck Architects, the renovation is designed to preserve the character of the historic building while bringing it up to the standards of a modern 21st-century cinema.

... but screenings continue at other venues!

While the renovations are underway, the Cinémathèque’s screenings will be hosted at several locations around the city, including the Théâtre des Capucins and the Cercle Cité. Each month, depending on availability, audiences can continue to enjoy their favourites — Cinema Paradiso, Afternoon Adventures, Great Restorations, Comedy Classics, and many more surprises. After all, the Cinémathèque is more than just a cinema building…
