synopsis

Surgeon Genessier is determined to restore the face of his daughter, Christiane, who was disfigured in a car accident. To achieve this, he carries out skin grafts using skin harvested from young women.

Compte parmi les rares incursions géniales, du moins marquantes, du cinéma français dans le registre du fantastique, et plus précisément de l’épouvante. Le film est contemporain des séries B européennes qui ont illustré des sujets proches. Mais le chef-d’œuvre de Franju se distingue de ces titres d’excellente qualité. Artiste solitaire, pessimiste et obsessionnel, Franju se réclame d’un courant onirique dont il serait le seul représentant, héritier du réalisme poétique d’avant-guerre mais aussi du surréalisme.

The infinitely re-viewable "Les Yeux sans visage" belongs in a tradition of horror combining the visceral, the philosophical and the psychological, ranging from Mary Shelley’s "Frankenstein" to Pedro Almodóvar’s "The Skin I Live In", and it shocked and disgusted audiences when it appeared alongside "Psycho" and "Peeping Tom" in 1960. A perverse fable about creation, hubris, misogyny, the illusion of physical perfection, the terrors of Auschwitz, the function of masks, it’s a film open to endless interpretations and full of unforgettable images.
