synopsis
The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig strive to build a dream life for their family in a house with a garden next to the camp.
Comment résumer en une poignée de lignes un tel électrochoc, dont la densité ne cesse de s’affirmer à chaque visionnage ? Au-delà de l’intelligence de sa mise en scène, "The Zone of Interest" est un chef-d’oeuvre de viscéralité, de ceux qui restent en vous longtemps après la séance. Un grand film sur l’indicible de la Shoah, et un grand film tout court.

Plutôt que de filmer la banalité du mal, Jonathan Glazer raconte la banalité de qu’on en fait. Ce qu’on a échoué à en faire par le passé, ce qu’on ne manquera pas à échouer d’en faire dans le futur, puisque l’histoire du film sur la Shoah ne fait que commencer.

‘To write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric’, Theodor Adorno famously wrote. Glazer’s film gives us the prosaic instead, refashioning it into the darkest, most vital sort of art it might be possible for us as a species to produce.

Chilling and profound, meditative and immersive, a movie that holds human darkness up to the light and examines it as if under a microscope. In a sense, it’s a movie that plays off our voyeurism, our curiosity to see the unseeable. Yet it does so with a bracing originality.
