synopsis
This delightfully unhinged film was improvised by Wong Kar Wai at short notice to help offset the soaring production costs of his still-unfinished masterpiece, Ashes of Time, using the very same cast. Inspired by the same source novel as Wong's film but reimagined in a wildly over-the-top register, it follows a fallen princess who joins forces with an eccentric band of warriors to recover a sacred martial arts manual. At the heart of this exuberant parody, Leslie Cheung gleefully shatters his romantic screen persona, delivering a hilarious performance as a narcissistic, flamboyant swordsman.
Un patchwork unique, singulier et éclatant de film fantastique, film de sabre, épopée spirituelle et ésotérique. Mais la virtuosité technique est aussi de mise. On a ici un long-métrage très drôle, très rythmé et coloré. Les dialogues provoquent des fous rires, les péripéties absurdes abondent et l’histoire est constamment parcourue par un humour farfelu et iconoclaste. On trouve des combats incroyables, magnifiés par la mise en scène et des effets spéciaux particulièrement réussis.
