synopsis
In the heart of Brooklyn, a bank robbery turns into a hostage crisis. The two small-time crooks, hopelessly out of their depth, find themselves locked in a long and tense negotiation with the police…
Cet huis clos allie suspense fiévreux et réquisitoire virulent contre la répression policière et le voyeurisme des télés. La banque encerclée devient le théâtre tumultueux de la vie, où se bousculent espoir et désillusion, compassion et panique. En anonyme révolté, tour à tour meneur héroïque et gangster pathétique, Al Pacino (dans son plus beau rôle ?) enflamme tout ce qu'il dit et touche.

The film's tone is extraordinarily flexible, holding within the same reality elements of the absurd, the ridiculous and the comic while sustaining a sense of tension and dread throughout. This is, of course, one of the classic Pacino roles, but don't overlook the late John Cazale as his accomplice, who gives us a character who's stupid and scared, troubled and dangerous, and disturbingly inscrutable.
