synopsis

Anthony John is a distinguished actor who becomes so consumed by playing in Othello on stage that it begins to blur the lines between his public persona and private life. This theatre-set film noir explores themes of identity, fame, and the dangerous allure of losing oneself in art.

Cukor knew actors. He drew more great performances from more actors and actresses than perhaps any other filmmaker in history. The film is the culmination of all this stuff: Colman’s career, Colman’s personality, Cukor’s career, Cukor’s personality, Shakespeare, screenwriters Gordon & Kanin, acting, directing, characters, etc. – it all comes together in a sublimely psychological way. It’s even frightening, as acting should be. And yet Cukor also makes it entertaining.
